Echoes of the Maestro – Song 76 – Jotheyali

Choosing to explore Illayaraja songs from different languages and not writing about Jotheyali will be the biggest sins. One of the popular songs that was loved across languages and remade in Tamil and Hindi as far as I know but not sure about other languages. I’ll loop in all the versions for you to enjoy this beautiful song.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 69 – Amma Amma

Amma Amma is the third song being featured in this series from Uzhaipaali this song appears at a very interesting point in the film and there are two versions of this song one by SPB and the female version by Sunanda. Such a haunting song in the way it was sung.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 66 – Sandhaikku vandha Kili

Sandhaikku Vandha Kili is your agmark Illayaraja Themmangu song and the orchestration takes you right to the village festival. Even the thavil notes don’t change much throughout the song only in the second charanam when the song switches to Kummi it slightly takes a turn but comes back to the same note.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 64 – Maanin Iru Kangal

Maanin Iru Kangal is one of those mellifluous Illayaraja songs that doesn’t come across as a song from a Rajnikanth film but it is. This song is composed in the Mayamalawagowla raga which is also called a Morning raga. This raga is said to evoke peace that creates a soothing effect hence can be sung anytime.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 63 – Iru Vizhiyin

Siva directed by Ameerjan is one of the big-budget movies from the Director. Unlike other movies back then this movie had Rajni and Raguvaran playing friends and foes. I loved this film when I was a kid and again this is another banger of an album from Illayaraja for Thalaivar.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 57 – Rajavukku Raja Naan da

Rajavukku Raja Naan da can be attributed to your typical Rajni Intro song which it is fun to watch and laced with a life message. I remember watching this song on a Music channel when I was a kid and was amusing to see the car driving on top of buildings when I rewatch this song now all of them are iconic buildings of Chennai

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 55 – Aadi maasam Kaathadikka

Yet another Disco song from the Rajni – Illayaraja combo, even though the song is set on a Disco floor but it is a folk song out and out. Interestingly, this song starts as a disco, but immediately after the prelude, and briefly, after the 2nd pallavi, the music jumps back to Disco mode and jumps back into folk mode.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 54 – Naan Thaan Toppu

Naan Than Toppu is one of those Rajni songs that falls into the Disco song troupe and also a genre called teasing the lead lady. This genre is often part of Tamil Cinema and is used to showcase the macho of the Male lead, even though this song is not as crass as Poomaalai. Sitting in 2024 and can’t fathom because they are the product of their times.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 51 – Oru Poo Vanathula

Kazhugu is one of those travel movies that was really more of a Horror than a thriller for a 10-year-old me, when I watched it back then on KTV or Sun TV, I don’t remember. I was so in awe of the RV-type vehicle with a shower

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 47 – Sennorita, I Love You

Johnny is one of the wholesome albums from Illayaraja and it’s hard for people to not love the songs. One of my all-time favorites is Senorita, I Love You. What’s interesting about this song is that the prelude sets a different mood than the rest of the song. It starts off with high energy
