Echoes of the Maestro – Song 96 – Om Namaha
Nagarjuna was fascinated by Mani Ratnam’s film Mouna Ragam (1986) and was eager to work with the director. Nagarjuna persistently waited outside the Director’s house each morning, hoping to speak with him during his daily morning walks. After a month of persistence, he managed to persuade Mani Ratnam to direct a Telugu film with him in the lead role. Although the director was initially reluctant, he eventually agreed, resulting in the creation of Geethanjali—his only Telugu film.
The story of Geethanjali was inspired by the film Young Die First and centers around two characters who know they are nearing death. Mani Ratnam developed the story and screenplay based on this idea. The film’s title was inspired by a heartbreaking diary of an 11-year-old girl in Delhi suffering from cancer. Her emotional entries, which were published at the time, moved Ratnam deeply, leading him to name both the film and its heroine after her. All the songs in this film were super duper hit even before the movie was released and I wanted to feature all the songs but this song drips in out and out love so I chose this.
