Echoes of the Maestro – Song 68 – Putham pudhu Poo poothadho

Thalapathi is one of the iconic films not only in Thalaivar Rajni’s career but also to Mani Ratnam and also to Tamil cinema. Whenever this film comes up most times Chinna Thaayaval will be the first song that’ll flash into our heads to that iconic break-up scene and the tune will flash into our eyes or the ever-soothing Yamunai Aatrile or Kaatukuyilu Manasukkula will be our favorites, however, Putham Pudhu poo Poothadho might not be on that list in our heads and only hardcore Illayaraja or Rajni fans might remember.

This song is set in Hamsanandi raga and K.J. Yesudas’s haunting voice paired with S. Janaki amma and Vaali’s lyrics makes it a unique song in the whole album. This song is set more in the tone where Rajni’s Suriya character looks back at his past mistakes and takes a step to do things right. If you haven’t listened to this song, I highly urge you to do so.
