Echoes of the Maestro

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 49 – Ulagathukaaga Pirandhavan

Another GOAT album from the Rajnikanth – Illayaraja combo and this film also marks the debut of Karthik Raja with the Pandiyanin Rajjiyathil song which is one of my favorites from the album and is interesting all the songs in this film are sung by Mano and K.S. Chitra amma for the duets. Back then only a couple of films would have such things but nowadays we get to listen to the same voice everywhere, pch!

Rajinikanth decided to make a low-budget film with director S. P. Muthuraman and the latter produced the movie under his production banner Visaalam Productions. Rajinikanth chose to act in the film to contribute to the retirement fund of the main crew members of the Muthuraman team who were regulars in most of the latter’s movies and he didn’t take any remuneration. The film was initially titled Nanban before being retitled to Pandian. It was Muthuraman’s penultimate film as director and a remake of a 1991 Kannada film Bombay Dada. This would be the last film in which Rajinikanth portrayed a police officer until the release of Darbar (2020).
