Echoes of the Maestro

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 45 – Akkarai Cheemai Azhaginiley

If Sorgame Endralum is about a man going outside his country and praising the Motherland this song is about a man astronishing about the advancements in the foreign land. Sorgame Endralum is an anti-thesis to Akkarai Cheemai Azhaginiley.

That being said this is the first movie Illayaraja used stereophonic aka stereo sound technology. In an old interview, he mentioned that he wanted to use the Technology in his debut movie Annakili itself, however, as a debutant, the Sound Engineers wouldn’t allow him. When Illayaraja learned that K.J.Yesudas had the equipment, he acquired it from him. Interestingly, all the songs in this album had K.J. Yesudas singing the male portions in the film (Maybe as a form of thanking him for Illayaraja doing this? We don’t know).

Akkarai Cheemai Azhaginiley is set in the Kapi raaga, as a Carnatic Music illiterate I myself know this Raaga. When the song starts you’ll feel the excitement of the lead landing and touring a new country and K.J.Yesudas brilliantly brings that energy to the song himself. I initially thought this song was by MSV but only now realized it was by the Maestro, yet another favorite of mine from the Rajni-Illayaraja combo.
