Echoes of the Maestro

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 40 – Oru Maina Maina Kuruvi

While the Uzhaipaali album is itself wholesome and all the songs from this album are my absolute favorites, this song is special, especially for the absolute dance value this song has. Eventhough, though this song can be termed the cabret type of song the sheer difference in Music Illayaraja shows while a new song lead lady shows up is brilliant.

The background beat of the song remains the same while additional instruments show up when necessary. While the song starts it keeps up the beat and when the second song’s leading lady shows up, the sultry nature of the song goes up a notch. Listen carefully to how Illayaraja uses the keyboard, guitar, and flute to turn up the sultriness of the song. When the third song lead lady shows up the sultriness goes up further and yet again you’ll see a different kind of Introduction music to her (I don’t know the instrument used here, apologies).

When I used to watch this song as a kid, it wasn’t crass or anything even though it was meant for adults but now when I listen to the lyrics Vaali can give a run for money to Gaajimuthu aka Vairamuthu. Listen to it for yourself and if you don’t understand the double meaning do put it in the comments *Wink wink*
