Echoes of the Maestro – Song 32 – Pootukkal Potaalum

I’ve been rewatching some of the old Captain Vijayakanth movies for my Podcast and man what a ride. It’s like a Tamil saying “Oru Kallula Rendu Maanga” which allows me to revisit some of my childhood favorites and use them for the Newsletter and my Podcast.

Chatriyan is that landmark Tamil film that changed the Police Genre entirely and allowed us to peek into Vijayakanth in a Mani Ratnam film. Eventhough Maniratnam didn’t direct the film, we can easily identify it has Mani Sir’s touch with the staging, Lighting, and Camera work. Even though Maalayil Yaaro Manadhodu is a delightful and popular song even now, I’m not sure about Pootukkal Potaalum. However, I remember enjoying this song because of the fun visuals and energetic S. Janaki amma’s vocals. If you haven’t revisited this song it is time now you do 😀

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 60 – VUzhaipaali Illadha

I especially chose this song because it was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Whenever this song gets played on TV or Radio I used to dance like Rajni it seems and it still is one of my favourites. Vaali brilliantly laces the song with the typical Rajni message but also does justice to the title and the Coolies. Mano simply elevates the song up a notch.

Maamanukku Mylaporu thaan is a fun song and through this song, I got to know some of the areas in Chennai like Mylapore, Tambaram, Avadi, Mannadi, etc., With Malaysia Vasudevan’s mimicry voices this got even more enjoyable.

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 58 – Vaangada Vaanga

Vaangada Vaanga is yet another typical Rajni Intro song with all the elements to it, from giving a message to how good a man he is and whatnot. Maaveeran (1986) is an official remake of the Hindi film Mard and also has two distinct specialties. This is the first film to record all the six-song tracks using the stereophonic sound and the first Tamil film which was completely shot in the 70mm Film format.
