Echoes of the Maestro

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 3 – Heloru Keloru

This time we are jumping to a Kannada song composed by Illayaraja for the movie Maathu Tappada Maga. Interestingly, this album marks the Maestro’s first venture into Kannada music. I recently came across a song from this album that was reused in Tamil, which is a popular song.

Let’s see if someone can identify the Tamil song without using Google or Wikipedia. Look up the song “Baanu Bhoomiya” on YouTube, give it a listen, and let me know which Tamil song it is from and the album it belongs to. The first 5 responses will be featured in the next issue.

Heloru Keloru is a rare cabaret song in the Kannada Film Industry, aka Sandalwood. It features typical cabaret musical notes with Illayaraja’s unique touch. The song is quite enjoyable, although it takes a minute and 45 seconds for the Pallavi to begin. It’s interesting to think about the impatience that modern music listeners might have with this. Some might start skipping ahead to reach the lyrics. The song also features a majestic performance by S. Janaki Amma, which is a highlight in itself.
