Echoes of the Maestro

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 23 – Mazhalai Endrum Maaradhu

Mazhalai Endrum Maaradha is featured in the Sethupathi IPS movie. The entire album itself is a gem, but Saathu Nada Saathu overshadowed all of them. I still remember watching this film in theaters, closing my eyes, and waiting for the boy to meet Sethupathi IPS during that song sequence.

Interestingly, this movie was released in 1994 during the Pongal festival. Apart from this, 6 other films were released that day, and 5 of them had Ilaiyaraaja compositions, which include Mahanadhi, Amaidhi Padai, Rajakumaran, and Veetla Visheshanga. We can’t imagine something like this happening in this day and age.

This song belongs to the genre that has been missing from Tamil cinema for a very long time, the Heroine Introduction song genre. Chitra Amma really amps it up in her signature style, and the chorus is very supportive. I might have enjoyed this song back then but completely slipped my mind. I’m glad that I revisited this album, and there are a couple of other songs which I will highlight in the future.
