Echoes of the Maestro

Echoes of the Maestro – Song 2 – Vaadiyamma Ponmagale

I stumbled upon this song from the movie “Paalooti valartha Kili,” which was the second film for which Illayaraja composed music. It’s surprising to learn that the movie was released just three months after “Annakili,” both directed by the same directors. It’s hard to imagine something like this happening today.

I listened to the entire album, and it seems like Illayaraja once again gave a banger of an album. All four songs seem to have been popular since then, but it’s my first time hearing them.

“Vaadiyamma Ponmagale” is a fun song and it appears to be the first collaboration between SPB and Illayaraja. Although there is another popular song from the same album featuring this combo, I believe this one was recorded first (correct me if I’m wrong). This song also seems to be the first collaboration between SPB and P. Susheela. It has a mix of Western and Indian Classical music, and don’t miss the usual SPB banter in the song.
