Mannan was a remake of the 1986 Kannada film Anuraga Aralithu. It is said that when Goundamani was approached for this film, he quoted a salary higher than Rajnikant’s. Eventually, they reached a consensus and agreed on a profit-sharing arrangement. One of the iconic comedy scenes in the film is when Thalaivar and Counter try to buy a ticket for the Chinnathambi film. This scene was said to be based on a real-life incident involving P. Vasu.
